In 1908, the city of Zwittau, Czechoslovakia brought Oskar Schindler into the world. As a young, catholic boy, Schindler attended a basic German language school. During this time, he had two best friends who were also his neighbors. His father, Hans Schindler, owned a factory and his mother, Louisa Schindler, was a homemaker at the time. Elfriede Schindler, Oskar's sister shared a close bond with him even though they were seven years apart. Oskar's family was the wealthiest and most prominent in his community. The young hero was popular around his area and had many friends, but he did not do very well in school. After finishing his primary education, Schindler decided that he did not want to go to a university or college.
During Schindler's twenties, he learned many trades such as working with machinery and chauffeuring. He then sold farm equipment with his father for three years. In 1928, his marriage with his wife, Emilie, sprouted several conflicts in the relationship between him and his father. This resulted in Oskar leaving his father's business and becoming a sales manager for an electric company in his area. Later on, Oskar ended up serving for the Czech Army and soon earned the title of Lance Corporal. He served his country for 18 months, then returned to working to his previous job as a sales manager. The company eventually went bankrupt which left Schindler unemployed and broke. His family was also broke due to the Great Depression in the 1930's. Because of this, he, as well as many others, joined the Nazi party.
